Andrew's project focused on using renewable energy development to alleviate poverty and environmental degradation, as these two issues were very intertwined in the regions where he worked. He visited poverty-stricken and remote field sites in western China, performed surveys and gained a better understanding of China's current energy use, poverty and environmental degradation. He identified applications for clean energy development such as biogas with Chinese characteristics and analyzed current implementation programs and the potential role biogas can play to build local economies while mitigating deforestation, indoor air pollution, poverty and other forms of environmental degradation. "Living and working in China definitely broadened my view of environmental issues in China (and around the world). Living each day under shrouds of smog also constantly reminded me of the scale and importance of environmental protection, enforcement, and renewable energy implementation. I have also realized how much more our world is interdependent." Andrew Chang
"The most important element of the MAP Fellowship program is the high quality of the Fellows, especially their strong expertise on energy issues." Barbara Finamore
