RMI is an inspiring research atmosphere where Stanford Fellows are valued members of the community. Beth was thrilled to work at RMI over the summer.

In addition to seeing the high altitude bananas firsthand, she learned how to utilize a type of Integrated Resource Planning tool for evaluating Demand Side Management measures called the Total Resource Cost test. She used this test to examine the cost-effectiveness of applying energy efficient HVAC, lighting, commercial refrigeration, and office equipment technologies to the existing U.S. commercial building sector.

Beyond the specific project on which she worked, there were many informal learning opportunities including, the Lunch and Learn lectures and field trips. She is grateful to MAP and RMI for the fellowship opportunity and hopes to apply what she learned as she moves back into the workforce.

"I think that the Fellowship has given me a better understanding of finance and the importance of economic potential for applying energy related research and technologies. It is one thing to study things and another to apply them. I am very excited about application and hope to build on the technical and financial knowledge and skills I gained."

Beth Copanas

"[It is] invaluable to have smart people help make significant progress on research projects as well as consulting projects."
