As a fellow in NRDC's Energy Program, Doug participated substantively in a variety of interesting and relevant projects ranging from pure advocacy to complex analytics to policy research.

Over the course of the summer Doug contributed in two main areas. The first was laying the groundwork for incorporation of Canadian tar sands into California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard through the development of a white paper analysis that NRDC presented to the California Air Resources Board. The second contribution was conducting several dozen interviews with noted energy experts in an attempt to identify emerging federal energy policy priorities. Doug and co-MAP Fellow, Carolyn Snyder, produced a comprehensive synthesis report that lays out these emerging trends and priorities as well as identifies areas where further research and discussion are needed. In addition to these projects, Doug spent a significant amount of time attending hearings in the House and the Senate, lobbying congressional staffers in support of clean energy, attending conferences in Washington and Reykjavik, and delivering a presentation on advanced vehicle technology at an environmental conference in Maryland.

"I did not guess at the start of the Fellowship that I would learn as much about such a diversity of things, that I would be trusted with as much responsibility as I was, nor that I would be able to work with people as intelligent and outgoing as they have been."

Douglas Hannah

"MAP Fellows have the technical background and aptitude to provide excellent contributions to our work with minimal supervision. Collaboration with and mentoring of them is also a joy for NRDC staff."

Deron Lovaas, Transportation Policy Director
Jim Presswood, Energy Advocate
