4.  Wal-Mart Pledges to Sell 100 Million Compact Fluorescents in '07

Nov. 30, 2006 - Wal-Mart has announced an ambitious campaign to sell 100 million compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) at its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club locations by the end of 2007.

If achieved, this goal has the potential to save customers as much as $3 billion in electrical costs over the life of the CFLs. In addition to saving money for consumers, these innovative products conserve up to 75 percent more energy than traditional light bulbs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

The roll-out plan includes interactive displays at 100 select Wal-Mart stores beginning in January to help customers choose which CFLs best fit their needs (an online savings calculator is currently available online); educational displays to allow customers to compare qualities and styles; increased shelf space with prominent displays in the lighting aisles; marketing promotions; and employee education as well as a competition to encourage them associates to generate CFL sales.

5.  $200 Million Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Proposed in Iowa

November 22, 2006
Source: Clean Edge News

Ethanol producer and marketer Broin Companies has announced plans to build a cellulose-to-ethanol production facility in Iowa, with completion expected in 2009.

Voyager Ethanol, located in Emmetsburg, Iowa, will be converted from a 50 million gallon per year (MGPY) conventional corn dry mill facility into a 125 million gallon per year commercial scale bio- refinery designed to use corn fractionation and lignocellulosic conversion technologies to produce ethanol from corn fiber and corn stover. Broin Companies has applied for matching grant funds through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to assist with the project.

The expansion will use existing infrastructure with projected costs estimated at just over $200 million dollars. Pilot research for the project has been conducted and the expansion is slated to begin in February with a commercial production timeline set approximately 30 months later, the company said. Officials expect to generate 11 percent more ethanol from a bushel of corn and 27 percent more ethanol from an acre of corn while using 83 percent less energy needed to operate a corn-to-ethanol plant.

6.  New McKinsey & Co Report on Energy Efficiency

Productivity of Growing Global Energy Demand:  A Microeconomic Perspective

To date, the global debate about energy has focused too narrowly on curbing demand. Instead, the best way to meet the challenge of growing global energy demand may be to focus on energy productivity, which reconciles both demand abatement and energy-efficiency.
Global energy demand will grow more quickly over the next 15 years than it has in the last 15. Demand could grow at a rate of 2.2 percent per year, boosted by developing countries and consumer-driven segments of developed economies. This acceleration will take place despite global energy productivity continuing to improve by 1.0 percent a year.

MGI's case studies indicate that there are plenty of viable opportunities to boost energy productivity that could translate into a deceleration of global energy-demand growth to less than 1 percent a year. But shifting this demand will require new policies that target various large end-user segments and encourage higher energy productivity.
