5. New ASES Report: Tackling Climate Change: Potential Carbon Emissions Reductions
The American Solar Energy Society unveiled a 200-page report, Tackling Climate Change in the U.S.: Potential Carbon Emissions Reductions from Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy by 2030.
It covers energy efficiency in buildings, transportation, and industry, as well as six renewable energy technologies: concentrating solar power, photovoltaics, wind power, biomass, biofuels, and geothermal power. The results indicate that these technologies can displace approximately 1.2 billion tons of carbon emissions annually by the year 2030-the magnitude of reduction that scientists believe is necessary to prevent the most dangerous consequences of climate change.
The report illustrates how energy efficiency measures could keep U.S. carbon emissions roughly constant over the next 23 years as the economy grows, and how renewable energy technologies could make deep cuts below today's emissions.
The report is available as a free download at http://www.ases.org/climatechange. High-quality graphics showing the various emissions reductions and deployment locations are also available at that site.

6. Branson's $25M prize: Extracting greenhouse gases from the atmosphere
February 9, 2007
Scientists to Vie for $25M Climate Prize
LONDON (AP) -- Sir Richard Branson announced a $25 million prize for the scientist who comes up with a way to extract greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, comparing it to the 17th-century quest to revolutionize navigation by determining longitude.
The Virgin Group chairman was joined by former Vice President Al Gore and other leading environmentalists as he announced the challenge to find the world's first viable design to capture and remove carbon dioxide from the air. A landmark report by the world's leading climate scientists and government officials, published in Paris last week, warned global warming will continue for centuries, creating a far different planet in 100 years. ''Man created the problem, therefore man should solve the problem,'' Branson said. ''Could it be possible to find someone on Earth who could devise a way of removing the lethal amount of CO2 from the Earth's atmosphere?''

7. An Energyfolk-person wants a site to place a 10 kW PV system
I am trying to find a site near Hayward/Union City for up to 10 kW PV system. I am looking for:
-a mostly flat ground area of about 100 by 150 feet
-a private landowner who will grant us the right to enter the property to modify and test the arrays for the life of the system;
-a site that is already an existing PG&E customer; and
-no obstacles (such as trees) shading the area from the south and limited or no shading from the east and west.
In exchange for letting us use your property, you would get free electricity from the system without having to purchase your own!
I want to place this system quickly, so please drop me a note or give me a call if you have or know of something that fits the bill.

January 2007
There are thousands of government policies in place around the world that act counter to stated objectives with regard to energy security, diversification, and environmental protection.
This ten distortionary energy subsidies report represents policies that, if corrected, would materially realign price signals to more effectively achieve energy market end goals. The list was generated with input from a variety of subsidy analysts around the world on distortionary subsidies an associated data.[2] The author is grateful for their suggestions, though is solely responsible for the final selection. If you disagree with the list, have additions to it, or more data to support existing entries, please direct them to earth_track@yahoo.com for consideration in a future update.

16. International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT): Two jobs
ICCT currently has two openings: a policy analyst position in the DC office, supporting the low carbon fuel program; and a staff scientist in the San Francisco office, supporting fuel efficiency, clean fuels, and city-based climate programs.
International Council on Clean Transportation
The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to dramatically reduce conventional pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions from personal, public and goods transportation in order to improve air quality and human health, and mitigate climate change. The Council is made up of leading government regulators and experts from around the word that participate as individuals based on their experience with air quality and transportation issues. The ICCT promotes best practices and comprehensive solutions to improve vehicle emissions and efficiency, increase fuel quality and sustainability of alternative fuels, reduce pollution from the in-use fleet, and curtail emissions from international goods movement. The ICCT has offices in Washington DC and San Francisco California. For more information, visit www.theicct.org
Staff Scientist, San Francisco, CA
We have an immediate opening for a staff scientist in the San Francisco office to support ICCT programs addressing global climate change and urban air pollution problems. This position will work closely with the Research Director in coordinating efforts to support the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) initially in Latin America, including Bogota, Mexico City, and Sao Paulo. Later this year, we may also begin CCI efforts in Asia. The position will require travel to project cities, likely to be in the range of four to eight trips of one to three weeks per year. Topics covered by projects include fuel economy, low carbon fuels, cleaner fuels and improved emissions standards for new vehicles, inspection and maintenance for the existing fleet, and improved tax and incentive programs. Other project areas could include international marine, heavy-duty truck emission standards, and greenhouse gas and fuel economy standards for light and heavy-duty vehicles.
Tasks will include: researching current policies and strategies; assisting in proposing and evaluating policy options, including both qualitative and quantitative analysis; helping arrange for and provide technical assistance for implementation; providing technical support to local partners; writing progress reports, policy briefs, and technical reports; and helping to organize workshops and give presentations to educate policy-makers and journalists.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a strong policy and technical background, most likely with a master's degree in environmental science, engineering, energy and resources, economics, or public policy. It is necessary to have a strong background and interest in climate change mitigation and reduction of conventional urban air pollution from the transportation sector. Successful candidates are likely to have international experience, including work, study, or significant travels, or experience working closely with international partners. Fluency in another language is highly desirable, especially Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, or Japanese.
Other requirements include: excellent written and verbal communications skills; strong quantitative, analytic, and research skills; highly organized and self-directed; creative and strategic in problem-solving and identifying policy needs; ability to accurately and concisely summarize complex information for a broad range of audiences; excel spreadsheet modeling and experience working with other modeling systems; at least 3+ years of relevant work experience with a government, an environmental or consulting organization, or a development agency.
Job details: Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience and a generous benefits package is provided. The position is located in downtown San Francisco, very convenient to public transportation.
