Post-Doc Opportunity – National Renewable Energy Laboratory Beginning Spring 2007 Modeling Grid Interaction and Benefits of Renewable Energy Technologies NREL’s Strategic Energy Analysis and Applications Center is seeking apost-doc to engage in analysis of the large-scale impacts and benefits of various renewable electricity (RE) generation technologies in the existing and possible future grid. This project will evaluate the actual operation of the electric power system, determining the displaced generation, fuel and emissions enabled by varying levels of deployment of RE technologies. Along with RE generation, this project will evaluate the benefits of various “enabling” technologies such as energy storage. The project will use a variety of models including “production cost” or “unit commitment and dispatch” models, often used by utilities to simulate the performance of their systems, considering the actual dispatch costs, and technical constraints of each power plant in a utilities’ system. The post-doc will be responsible for developing a high level of skill with these models, and creating various scenarios of RE penetration.
