1.  Reaction to Friedman's column on the Green Generation

A couple of you sent reactions to  Friedman's call to reducing carbon emissions on campuses ("The Greenest Generation"  NYTimes, April 19; energyfolks same date).  The last thing I want to do is moderate a discussion, but in this case, since there are suggestions for better organizations to contact (if you are so inclined) than those mentioned in his column , I'll pass these along:

Here's one:

Perhaps folks on the EnergyFolks list already knowŠ but apparently Friedman doesn't!  Energy Action has already helped catalyze more than 150 college campus campaigns under the initiative "Campus Climate Challenge."  Energy Action: http://www.energyaction.net/

For a fellow calling for civil disobedience and direct action, referring college students to white collar research institutions doesn't make much sense.  Energy Action is a far better organizing resource than Conservation International or World Resources Institute.

With the Apollo Alliance, Energy Action released a report several months ago called "New Energy for Campuses" - which even Thomas Friedman might find to be a useful resource for others thinking about how to carry forward the "Greenest Generation.":

And another:

While I believe that Friedman had the right intent, I feel it was very irresponsible for him not to at least do some web research on the many college campus groups who are trying to do exactly what he says, and make their campuses more sustainable (where they are often met with short-sighted resistance from officials of Al Gore's generation, resistant to change and risk).
Examples include

I thought your readers might appreciate knowing that there are in fact many young people who are doing as much as they can.

3.  Job:  Sentech, Inc., Transportation energy consulting in D.C.

Sentech, Inc., a renewable energy and energy efficiency consulting firm based just outside of Washington, DC, will be hiring a few entry-level engineers in the coming months.  This would be a great opportunity for engineering, physical science, or earth systems energy track, and/or related majors with an interest in sustainable transportation to gain experience providing technical and programmatic support to a federal client in highway transportation vehicle technologies.  Areas of work may involve research and preparation of technical papers and analyses, quick response management and administrative support, communications and outreach activities, and research to support on-going technical, policy, regulatory and budget analysis. The employee is expected to interface with clients on an as needed basis with direct approval and full knowledge of the Project/Task Manager. The employee may be asked to work at company headquarters or at the client's site.

4.  Environmental Fellow:  Summer Job for an MBA student on Plug-In Hybrids,Boulder

The Fellow would help develop a business plan for establishing a pilot plug-in hybrid gasoline/electric vehicle fleet program for one or more of the major electric utilities in the West. Under such a program, a utility would help finance and support the development of infrastructure for retrofitting a fleet of gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles that can recharge their batteries when parked at a centralized location, thereby greatly extending the range the vehicles can drive on a tank of gas. Several general studies by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and elsewhere have indicated that such a program shows promise for greatly reducing gasoline use and net GHG emissions of automobiles - even when increased carbon dioxide emissions associated with the increased electricity use is considered - while at the same time increasing electricity load (and therefore revenues) to utilities. The utility can obtain the emission credits associated with the reduced GHG emissions. By reducing oil consumption, the potential national security benefits of such a program are also compelling.
