3. New Super-Efficient Plug-in Hybrid Unveiled
May 18, 2006
"Trinity," a highly fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid
vehicle, was unveiled today by Professor Andy Frank and engineering
students at the University of California, Davis.
The vehicle is the team's entry in the national
Challenge X competition, sponsored by General
Motors Corp. and the U.S. Department of Energy.
Field trials for the competition will take place in Phoenix next month.
Trinity is a 2006 model Chevy Equinox SUV powered
by electric motors and a small internal
combustion engine that can run on gasoline or
ethanol. The electric motors and batteries
provide power for driving at low speeds and for a
range of up to 40 miles, and the gas engine
supplies additional power for longer journeys and highway driving.
Computer models run by the team show that
Trinity's average gas consumption in everyday use
could reach about 200 miles per gallon, assuming
an all-electric range of 40 miles, said graduate
student Peter English, outreach coordinator for the team.
Trinity also carries a small on-board fuel cell
to provide auxiliary power for air conditioning,
entertainment systems and other services.
And in a related event..pictures of congress driving a plug-in hybrid: Last week Set America Free and CalCars partnered on a three day series of events featuring for the first time in Washington DC 100-mpg plug-in hybrids. Brought to DC from CA and CT, the cars were driven by 10 senators and more than 30 congressmen as well as media and other notables. For a summary and pictures from the event

4. Geothermal heat pumps advocated for California
May 19- A goal of 50% renewable energy for California was presented to a Geothermal Energy Summit at UC Davis. Included in the proposal was a call by Karl Gawell, head of the Geothermal Energy Association for the state to expand its use of geothermal energy for direct uses, such as heating buildings and installing geothermal heat pumps, ten-fold within 20 years. He called for a "Green-G" certification program to recognize and encourage more geothermal use by homes, businesses, and schools across the state.
Gawell urged California to "clean-up the power grid and avoid having to build new nuclear power plants by tapping the state's underutilized natural advantage -- its geothermal resources."
According to Gawell, 25 percent of the state's system power should come from geothermal resources by 2025. Doing so would add capacity and improve the reliability of the state's power system, he argued.

5. Grist summary of Bush's Nucular Advocacy:
Nuke Skytalker
Bush pushes nuclear power at home and abroad
President Bush has embraced nuclear power with a vengeance (on us?). On a tour of a nucular ... er, nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania yesterday, Bush called for the construction of new nuke plants to help curb greenhouse-gas emissions. "Let's quit the debate about whether greenhouse gases are caused by mankind or by natural causes; let's just focus on technologies that deal with the issue," he said. Thanks to a new raft of nuke subsidies Bush signed into law last year, 16 companies have expressed interest in building new plants, though none has submitted a formal application. Exelon Corp.'s president has said his company has "no intention" of building a new nuke plant until there's a solution to the problem of where to put nuclear waste. What a fuddy-duddy! Also yesterday, Bush signed on to a treaty with the European Union, Russia, Japan, India, China, and South Korea to spend $5.9 billion attempting to build the world's first nuclear fusion reactor in France. Fusion technology has never succeeded, but like victory in Iraq, it's always been just around the corner.

6. Integrated Green Building Design: An Educational Forum, June 21
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2006
8:30 AM - 1:30 PM
JASPER RIDGE BIOLOGICAL PRESERVE, STANFORD UNIVERSITY
CONFIRMED SPEAKERS
Philippe S. Cohen, Administrative Director of Stanford University's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve.
Dr. Cohen was involved in the planning, design, and construction of Stanford's first green/sustainable building, the Leslie Shao-ming Sun Field Station.
Dr. Cohen will give tours of the building, and speak about the integrated planning process.
Scott Shell, Senior Associate at EHDD Architecture and a nationally recognized expert on high performance and sustainable design.
Title: Five Principals of Integrated Design
"Integrated design can reduce construction cost while providing significant sustainable design benefits. On the CSU Monterey Bay Library, by comparing a number of integrated structural, mechanical, and architectural schemes, we found that tradeoffs from one discipline more than offset added costs in another, while achieving energy savings of almost 40%."
Peter Rumsey, founder and President of Rumsey Engineers, Inc., a global player in energy efficiency.
Renowned green architect Jason McLennan, in his book "The Philosophy of Sustainable Design," describes Rumsey Engineers as an "Š innovative engineering firm in California with perhaps the most talented mechanical engineer in the country - Peter Rumsey."
