1. Survey Shows Strong Support for Nuclear Energy
WASHINGTON, May 31, 2006 /PRNewswire
The Clean and Safe Energy Coalition released a national public opinion poll that shows strong support among Americans for nuclear energy and reveals a dearth of knowledge among many that currently shapes opinion. The poll conducted April 3-5, 2006, by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates, among 810 registered voters has a +/-3.44 margin of error.
"I am convinced that as people learn more about nuclear energy, they will come to share my certainty that increasing America's supply of nuclear energy makes sense from an environmental and an economic standpoint," said CASEnergy Co-Chair and former EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman.
"The survey shows that when given the facts that nuclear power is a clean, affordable and domestically produced energy source, support grows substantially," said David Ginsberg, Director of Political Operations for Penn, Schoen & Berland. "With just a little bit of new information, people become extremely favorable to using nuclear energy and believe it should play a much larger role in our nation's electricity grid."
After just a brief amount of education, nuclear energy's favorability rating increased, with 73 percent of respondents very favorable or somewhat favorable to it. Furthermore, upon hearing simple facts, nearly half (48 percent) of respondents said that United States should rely heavily on nuclear energy, giving it either a seven, eight or nine on a nine-point scale when asked to rate how much the country should rely on nuclear energy as a source of electricity.
"These findings clearly indicate there is a need to educate and raise awareness about nuclear energy as a clean, safe, affordable and reliable supply of electricity for America," said Whitman. "The Clean and Safe Energy Coalition is committed to fulfilling that mission."

2. Survey: Americans Not Warming Up to Nuclear Power as Solution to Energy Crisis and Climate Change
WASHINGTON, May 31, 2006 /PRNewswire
Despite a major sales push by the Bush Administration and the electrical utility industry, nuclear power is viewed in a deeply skeptical way by a "strong and strikingly bipartisan majority" of Americans, according to a major new Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) survey released today by the Civil Society Institute, a nonpartisan and nonprofit think tank that has conducted extensive public opinion research into the attitude of Americans about energy-related issues. According to the survey, Americans favor developing clean renewable energy alternatives and strategies -- including increased conservation, solar energy and wind power -- that can be delivered more rapidly than nuclear power.
The new CSI survey found that more than three out of five Americans (61 percent) say the nation can't "afford to wait ... to put in place part of the solution to the energy crisis and global warming" if "building more nuclear power plants will take a decade or more in the U.S. and cost tens of billions of dollars." Only a third said the U.S. could wait for more nuclear power plants to come on-line as a way to dealing with today's energy and climate woes.
Another illustration of the strikingly bipartisan nature of the views of Americans on nuclear power: Only 9 percent of conservatives, 8 percent of independents and 5 percent of liberals say they have "no concerns about increased U.S. reliance on nuclear power."
Opinion Research Corporation Vice President Wayne Russum said: "These survey findings suggest that Americans in general - and politically active Americans more specifically - are unlikely to be persuaded by arguments that nuclear power is a credible solution to today's energy crisis and climate change. Those who are out there selling nuclear power on the campaign trail and in the news media clearly have their work cut out for them. The bottom line is that Americans want to hear more about conservation, solar and wind power - which they view as credible steps that can be taken now to deal with the energy crisis and global warming."
For full survey findings, go to the Civil Society Institute Web site at http://www.civilsocietyinstitute.org.

3. Federal Aviation Administration suspends wind projects in Midwest
May 31 - Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News - Michael Hawthorne Chicago Tribune
The FAA has stopped work on more than a dozen wind farms planned across the Midwest, saying research is needed on whether the giant turbines could interfere with military radar.
But backers of wind power say the action has little to do with national security. The real issue, they say, is a group of wealthy vacationers who think a proposed wind farm off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts would spoil the view at their summer homes.
Opponents of the Cape Wind project include several influential members of Congress. Critics say their latest attempt to thwart the planting of 130 turbines in Nantucket Sound has led to a moratorium on new wind farms hundreds of miles away in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.
Federal officials declined to reveal how many stop-work orders have been sent out. But developers said that at least 15 wind farm proposals in the Midwest have been shut down by the Federal Aviation Administration since the start of the year.
The one-sentence congressional order directs the Defense Department to study whether wind towers could mask the radar signals of small aircraft. Last year, Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), a critic of the Cape Wind project planned for Nantucket Sound, added an amendment to a military spending bill directing the Defense Department to study wind turbines' effect on small-aircraft radar signals. Since then, despite the fact that dozens of wind projects currently operate within sight of radar systems and have caused no discernable problems, all proposed turbines within the scope of military radar have been blocked.
