1. Tesla Motors sells out its first round of all-electric roadsters
August 15, 2006 11:35 AM PDT (from some blog.. forgot which)
Will people $100,000 to plunk down on an electric sports car? Yes, says Tesla Motors.
Tesla, which has created an all-electric sports car, has already booked deposits for its first 100 cars, according to Martin Eberhard, Tesla's CEO. The $100,000 deposits guarantee that the buyers will get the cars, which will come out next year.
"All 100 are gone," he said.
The company unveiled its Tesla Roadster on July 19 in a glitzy event in Santa Monica. At the time, around 37 people had already plunked down deposits. Many early buyers, such as Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin and Ebay co-founder Jeff Skoll, are investors in Tesla. So far, only a few cars have been fully completed.
The Tesla Roadster goes from zero to sixty in about four seconds, about as fast as a Ferrari. But, unlike a Ferrari, it doesn't make a vrooming noise or smell like gas. It sort of makes an eerie hum, like those cars in the 70s cult classic Death Race 2000.

2. Sept 14 lecture: James Lovelock, "Earth's Climate Crisis and the Fate of Humanity"
Stanford, Jordan Hall Room 420-040, Thursday Sept 14, 730 PM
Also Kepler's for a book signing, Sept 15, 7:30 pm
Also California Academy of Sciences in SF, Sept 13 at 8 pm
Still vigorous at 87, Jim Lovelock is a towering figure in environmental science. In 1957, he invented the Electron Capture Detector, which allowed the first trace detection of pesticides such as DDT and PCBs, and provided the scientific basis for Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". He discovered the ubiquitous presence of CFCs in the atmosphere which triggered the discovery of their disastrous role in stratospheric ozone depletion by Noble prize winners Rowland and Molina. His work at JPL for NASA on the Martian atmosphere, led him to reflect on life on Earth and develop the 'Gaia' hypothesis, later fleshed out in cooperation with biologist Lynn Margulis (Gaia, A New Look of Life on Earth, Oxford University Press).

3. Million Solar Roofs Bill, SB 1, passes CA Senate, Aug 8
Sacramento - After two long years, the Million Solar Roofs bill, SB 1
(Murray), passed the Senate Floor by a vote of 36 to 4, clearing
the state legislature and heading to the governor's desk for his up or
down approval.
The policies contained in SB 1 include:
1. Lift on net metering cap enabling consumers to receive a credit
on their electric bill for excess energy generated by their solar
system. Current law caps the number of customers in each utility
territory to 0.5% of a utility's total load. SB 1 would lift this cap to
2.5%. An estimated 5% lift is ultimately needed to build a million solar
roofs in California.
2. Mandate that all home builders, by 2011, make solar panels a
standard option for homebuyers, just like marble countertops. The bill
would also direct the California Energy Commission to convene a
proceeding to determine if and when solar power should become a standard
feature of new construction.
3. Sets a goal that California's municipal utilities, such as Los
Angeles Department of Water and Power, adopt their own solar rebate
program totaling $800 million. The Public Utilities Commission does not
have legal authority over the municipal utilities so legislation is
needed to create a statewide solar rebate program. In creating this
goal, SB 1 would remove $800 million from the $3.2 billion in the PUC's
California Solar Initiative, lowering total available funds in
investor-owned utility territory to $2.4 billion.
Should SB 1 become law, it, combined with the PUC's California Solar
Initiative, California will have created the largest solar program in
the country aiming to build 3,000 MW of solar power-the equivalent of 6
large power plants-on homes, businesses, farms, and schools throughout
the state.

4. Clinton Climate Initiative partners with Large Cities Climate Leadership Group
August 1, 2006
President Clinton was joined by London Mayor Ken Livingstone, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to announce the first project of CCI, a partnership between the Clinton Climate Initiative and the Large Cities Climate Leadership Group. The Large Cities Climate Leadership Group, chaired by the Mayor of London, is an organization comprised of most of the largest cities in the world that have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CCI will:
1. Create a purchasing consortium that will pool the purchasing power of the cities to lower the prices of energy saving products and accelerate the development and deployment of new energy saving and greenhouse gas reducing technologies and products. This will be similar to the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative total quality management approach that has substantially lowered AIDS drug prices for members of its purchasing consortium.
2. Mobilize the best experts in the world to provide technical assistance to cities to develop and implement plans that will result in greater energy efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
3. Create and deploy common measurement tools and internet based communications systems that will allow cities to establish a baseline on their greenhouse gas emissions, measure the effectiveness of the program in reducing these emissions and to share what works and does not work with each other.
Many cities have worked individually to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions but most of these practices are not in widespread, systematic or coordinated use, thus greatly reducing their effectiveness. CCI will engage the largest cities in the world and allow them to be leaders for all cities by making the direct benefits from the purchasing consortium, technical assistance, and measurement and communication tools available to other cities throughout the world.
The CCI-Large Cities partnership begins with 22 of the largest cities in the world participating - Berlin, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Caracas, Chicago, Delhi, Dhaka, Istanbul, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Melbourne, Mexico City, New York, Paris, Philadelphia, Rome, Sao Paulo, Seoul, Toronto, Warsaw and the partnership anticipates that many more cities will join over the next four to six months.
