Josh was integrally involved in projects for both the “Built Environment” and “Energy and Resources” teams at RMI.

Josh drafted the first version of a chapter for the Hawaii Energy Strategy, performing GIS analysis to balance land-use, soil type, and water availability for growing biofuel crops. This analysis will help Hawaii dramatically reduce their dependence on imported energy sources by means of a concerted state-wide effort.

Josh also did research that will lay the groundwork for a multi-year study RMI is starting.  The focus of this study is to define a wholly new utility “smart grid” system that is dramatically decentralized, and uses modern digital communication and distributed intelligence to manage both supply and demand as equivalent resources, in order to radically increase economic and environmental efficiency. Additionally, he provided consulting to the State of New Jersey on the effectiveness of their existing Renewable Energy programs.

For the Built Environment Team, Josh was involved in a variety of projects focusing on green strategies and sustainability.  He provided LEED-consulting and energy-modeling services to clients to assess energy savings realized through efficiency measures and green design. He helped develop a tool that compares the carbon, energy, and water sustainability of building construction, operation, and lifestyle choices based on specific site productivity and natural energy, carbon and ecological fluxes.  He also was involved in green product research of roof-integrated solar photovoltaic tiles.  Finally, he helped the Denver International Airport compare the sustainability and green attributes of different carpet choices for their terminals.

“I have learned how energy modeling is used in practice, developed consulting skills, and had the opportunity to promote green design and sustainability to a variety of public and private clients.”

- Josh Hatch

“The things that Josh has been working on for us are very central to some of the most important projects we have underway today.”

- John Anderson, Team Leader, Energy and Resources
