MAP provides early stage leadership and/or financial support for energy and environment-related initiatives for Stanford students as well as program elements that reflect leadership around sustainable energy education, research, and practice.
Energy Socials
MAP sponsors informal gatherings throughout the year, bringing together students, faculty, alumni and professionals to promote discussion on energy and environment. The Stanford Energy Club, in conjunction with Stanford’s Woods Institute for the Environment, organizes the Energy Socials to follow the Woods Energy Seminars.
Student Scholarships and Awards
- MAP endowed the William W. Whitley Citizen Scholar Award, in honor of Bill Whitley, a Stanford geology alumnus. Mr. Whitley, who died December 31, 2001, worked with MAP for almost a decade, sourcing deal flow in the Rockies and contributing significantly to MAP’s success. This award honors a graduating Earth Systems student for outstanding academic achievement and remarkable contributions to Stanford, peers, and others.
- MAP provides a grant for two Stanford students to attend the annual American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Conference. The students are selected by Stanford University’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
Student Organizations
- Stanford Energy Club: Formed by a merger of Energy Crossroads and the Stanford Energy Web, the Stanford Energy Club provides an information clearinghouse for all energy resources and activities at Stanford and in the surrounding area, and brings together Stanford scholars and local professionals from different disciplines for cross-disciplinary discussion of energy issues.
- Stanford Solar and Wind Energy Project (SWEP): MAP helped sponsor the installation of meteorological towers to measure wind speed in Soledad and Redwood City to evaluate the potential for commercially-viable wind energy installations.
- The Berkeley-Stanford CleanTech Conference (BSC2): An open forum held each year surrounding a particular aspect of green tech. The 2010 conference focused on "Electric Car 2.0 – Who will win the race?"
Energy Folks Newsletter Archive
MAP maintains an archive of Professor Gil Masters' Energy Folks newsletter, a periodic summary of important "energy in the news" as well as many relevant job opportunity announcements.
Research
MAP conducts and supports research in the sustainable energy arena. Research about the role for LEED certification in green building policies in the Higher education sector, "To LEED or Not to LEED?" was published in 2009, with an update published in 2010 entitled "Role of LEED in Higher Education", which is available on the USGBC Green Campus Campaign website. The research suggests that recent improvements in the LEED rating system makes now a good time for colleges and universities to revisit the many benefits imparted by achieving LEED certification.
Buildings that Teach
MAP is contributing financial support for new buildings at Stanford that will maximize energy and water efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
- The Graduate School of Business Knight Management Center is seeking LEED Platinum certification, the highest achievable green building rating. The project will incorporate innovations in sustainable site development, water and energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.
- The "Green Dorm" will be a living laboratory, built to demonstrate, measure and test the environmental and economic sustainability for innovative buildings, with measureable performance in a real-world student living setting.
