The current LEED rating system excludes 'process loads' from the energy efficiency calculations in the rating system. Process loads are not regulated by the ASHRAE 90.1 energy standard (the current basis for LEED energy efficiency credits) and include, but are not limited to, plug loads, commercial refrigeration equipment, commercial kitchen equipment, medical devices, lab equipment, etc.

While at the US Green Building Council, Pete researched the process load issue to determine its importance in various building types, and recommended ways to accurately and fairly include process loads in the energy efficiency calculations.

"Working at the USGBC has increased my awareness of the importance of the building industry with regards to energy and the environment. Learning about the LEED rating system has opened my eyes to a variety of possible career opportunities relating to sustainable energy and construction that I never previously realized existed. I am sure the relationships and contacts I established with experts in both the green building and sustainable energy fields will be a great benefit to me in my career."
