Sasha completed an analysis of the net greenhouse gas emissions associated with imported harvested wood products in California. This analysis involved estimating upstream emissions from the harvest, manufacture and transportation of harvested wood products, and estimating downstream emissions from decomposition of wood products in California’s landfills. She worked closely with academics, forestry scientists, and members of industry groups to retrieve data and support my results.

She also began a project examining afforestation and reforestation potential in California, using the 2010 Forest and Range Assessment Report data, and employing Arc GIS. Sasha presented her paper on harvested wood products to the California Air Resources Board forest inventory team, who showed interest in the findings and encouraged her to continue working with the CARB in communicating the policy implications of her research.

“I learned so much about the environmental non-profit community. I did GIS work at the Nature Conservancy, talked to people from Earth Justice and EDF in Sacramento, and met with the Sierra Club. It was so interesting to see the diverse array of approaches to environmental work.”

Sasha Engelmann
