GREEN BUILDINGS TOUR

Thursday 11/20/2008

Limit: 38.
Meals: none
Meet at 11:45 at the Carnegie Department of Global Ecology main lab building
260 Panama St, Stanford

This trip will tour local examples of buildings that represent exemplary performance in green design and construction. The first is the Carnegie Department of Global Ecology at Stanford. This building is a research facility for some of the world's preeminent faculty and research program. The building features numerous recycled and reclaimed material in its building elements, such as exterior cladding reclaimed from old wine caskets. It's state-of-the-art HVAC system is an example of state-of the art design which has energy consumption that is only a fraction compared to other Stanford laboratories. The building also features a space cooling feature that uses California's cool, clear summer nights to create chilled to be used during the heat of the day.

Next, the tour will visit a local home aspiring for LEED Platinum in Palo Alto. This house is currently under construction, so students will be able to the see the guts of the building systems being implemented in this project. These will include--

  • Advanced Framing Strategies: 2x4 24" o.c. framing, ladder T-walls, 2-stud corners
  • Environmentally Preferable Materials: FSC and reclaimed wood, recycled steel, slag in concrete
  • Durability: waterproofing, indoor moisture management
  • Passive Solar Design: thermal mass, efficient ceiling fans, and shading for space cooling
  • Active Solar Systems: 9 kW of solar PV, 200 kBTU of solar thermal
  • Site Ecology: bat boxes and bantam hens for pest management
  • Building Feedback Systems: Agilewaves building monitoring.
